Matchweek 34 is over and it was another eventful weekend in the Premier League. Manchester City moved ever closer to the title, the top-four hopefuls won, and the anti-Glazer protests at Old Trafford led to Manchester United’s match with Liverpool being called-off.
Matchweek 34 Roundup
City move closer to coronation
On Saturday, Man City moved to within one win of securing the title. A much-changed City lineup handed a rare start for Sergio Aguero, who broke the deadlock in the second half against Crystal Palace. Ferran Torres then added a second just 83 seconds later as City cruised to a 2-0 win. City would have been crowned champions if Man Utd lost their match against Liverpool, but violent protests at Old Trafford against the Glazers led to the match being postponed.
There was footballing action though on Sunday, with both North London teams picked up impressive wins. Arsenal kicked off the day with a 2-0 away win against in-form Newcastle. Goals from Mohamed Elneny and Aubameyang were enough to sink the Magpies, who had Fabian Schar sent off in stoppage time. Tottenham won 4-0 at home to already relegated Sheffield Utd, with Gareth Bale’s hattrick stealing the show.
Chelsea keep up the pace in top-four race
Spurs are now five points behind fourth placed Chelsea, who won 2-0 at home to relegation-threatened Fulham. Kai Havertz’s brace saw Chelsea cement their position in the top-four, simultaneously closing the gap on Leicester. The other results on Saturday saw Brighton picking up an impressive 2-0 win against Leeds, all but guaranteeing their status for another season. Meanwhile Everton followed up their historic win at the Emirates with a 2-1 home loss to Aston Villa.
On Friday, Leicester’s top-four challenge hit a road block at St. Mary’s. Southampton were reduced to ten-men but the Foxes couldn’t capitalize like they did in this fixture last season, managing only a 1-1 draw. They allowed Chelsea and West Ham to close the gap on them, with the latter winning 2-1 at Burnley on Monday. After Chris Wood had given Burnley the lead, two goals from the returning Michail Antonio helped the Hammers pick up a crucial win.
So that was it for matchweek 34. Unfortunately due to the social media boycott, we do not have the official Premier League table after the latest round.
