Mourinho was sacked one week before Carabao Cup final

Matchweek 32 started on Friday, with a 2-2 draw between Everton and Tottenham, in what would turn out to be Jose Mourinho’s last game as Spurs manager. Harry Kane scored two goals and then limped off with an injury. At 29 years old, Ryan Mason became the youngest ever Premier League manager when he was announced as Mourinho’s replacement. His tenure began with a narrow 2-1 win against Southampton on Wednesday.

West Ham found themselves on the wrong end of a 3-2 score line at Newcastle. A red card for Craig Dawson, an Issa Diop own goal and a Joelinton goal meant the Hammers went into the break two goals and a man down. But the 10-men rallied and goals from Issa Diop and Jesse Lingard (penalty) levelled the scores. But just moments later, Joe Willock fired in a header to clinch a vital win for Newcastle. Later that day, Wolves’ 1-0 defeat of Sheffield United confirmed relegation for the Blades. After finishing ninth last season, Sheffield United’s fate was sealed with six games still remaining.

Amid reports that clubs are beginning to leave the European Club Association, Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw away at Leeds. Diego Llorente’s first goal for Leeds in the 87th minute cancelled Sadio Mane’s first half strike.

Football is for the fans was the message from Premier League

On Tuesday, wild protests outside Stamford Bridge sparked the fire that brought down the European Super League. Chelsea succumbed to pressure from fans and media and became the heroes by withdrawing from the Super League. This caused a chain reaction and soon the other English clubs followed suit. The protests also caused a 15-minute delay to the meeting between Chelsea and Brighton. The match though couldn’t keep up with the drama that preceded it, as the teams played out a drab goalless draw. A valuable point for Brighton, who moved seven points clear of the relegation zone.

Manchester City fell behind to a first minute goal from John Mcginn, but recovered to win 2-1 at Aston Villa, a match that saw both sides reduced to 10-men. The elongated matchweek came to an end yesterday with Leicester’s comfortable 3-0 win against West Brom. The Foxes moved four points clear of fourth-placed Chelsea, while also halting West Brom’s recent revival.
