Premier League is England’s top division league. It was founded in 1992 when teams decided to break away from the Football League in the interest of revenue from TV broadcast deals. The recently concluded 2020/21 season was the 29th season, with Manchester City winning their fifth Premier League title. Manchester United are the league’s most successful team with 13 titles. They are well clear of Man City and Chelsea, who have five each.
Up until the 1994/95 season, 22 teams participated in the competition. But the competition was reduced to 20 teams in an attempt to clear the congested fixture list. The Premier League follows a relegation-promotion relationship with England’s second division, the EFL Championship. Since 2001, the top-four teams qualify for the UEFA Champion’s League and the fifth placed team, along with the FA Cup and EFL Cup winners qualify for Europe’s lower ranked competitions.
