Liverpool 4-3 Spurs: Late drama in a Premier League classic

Jota had the last laugh in arguably the match of the season

Spurs produced a spirited late comeback at Anfield, but Diogo Jota scored even late to ensure three points stayed in Merseyside.

Both Liverpool and Spurs have endured tough seasons and both were in desperate need of three points. Spurs imploded last week at Newcastle, and looked to be heading that way again after 15 minutes. The Reds flew out of the blocks and were 2-0 up after just 5 minutes, with goals from Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz, who was starting a game for the first time since October. Mo Salah’s penalty at 15 minutes looked to put the game beyond any doubt.

But after a torrid 15 minutes, the north Londoners gradually began turning things around and started causing problems. First, Heung-min Son was denied by Virgil van Dijk, who came back on the line after Alisson was beaten. Harry Kane then pulled one back for the visitors, before Dejan Kulusevski wasted a glorious chance.

Second Half

After the break, Son and Cristian Romero both struck the post in quick succession. Then when Liverpool had seemingly regained control, Son once again broke free to make it 3-2. It was the South Korean’s free-kick in stoppage time from which Richarlison grabbed what looked like an equalizer. But Lucas Moura’s misplaced pass just 90 seconds after the equalizer allowed Jota to finish Spurs and seal a thrilling victory.

With this win, Jurgen Klopp’s men have now leapfrogged Spurs into fifth position in the table. Ryan Mason’s men are on 54 points, ahead of Aston Villa only on goal difference. The Villans lost 1-0 to Man United on Sunday. Liverpool are 7 points behind fourth placed Man United, but have played a game extra. Both Spurs and Liverpool could be overtaken by Brighton, who have three and two games in hand respectively over them.
