Chelsea needed extra-time to get the job done against South American champions Palmeiras to win the Club World Cup. Romelu Lukaku’s road to redemption continued as he put the Blues in front early in the second half. But the lead lasted only 10 minutes as Thiago Silva was caught handling the ball in a VAR replay. Raphael Veiga levelled the matters from the spot by sending Edouard Mendy the wrong way.
In extra-time, Chelsea once again seized control but failed to create many clear cut chances. But with five minutes left, the referee once again went to the monitor and awarded a penalty, this time to Chelsea. Cesar Azpilicueta’s shot was obstructed by the arm of Luan, but was missed by the referee initially. However after VAR consultation, he awarded Kai Havertz the chance to make history. And the German did exactly that, with a coolly slotted pressure penalty to win the match. Palmeiras ended the match with 10 men after Luan was sent off for a professional foul on Havertz.
Thomas Tuchel’s magic touch continues
What a year or so it has been for Thomas Tuchel. Dismissed by PSG, Tuchel took over at Chelsea and since then has gone from strength to strength. He led the Blues to the FA Cup final and Champions League triumph in his first few months. Now, in his first full season, he has won the UEFA Super Cup, has Chelsea into the EFL Cup final, and now won the FIFA Club World Cup.
His title charge may have crumbled over the festive period, but if it wasn’t for a barrage of injuries and covid cases, things might have been different. Tuchel himself tested positive for covid recently, but fortunately recovered in time to lift the trophy last night. With the Club World Cup now in his pocket, he will look to add the EFL Cup and FA Cup this season, as well as defend his Champions League crown.
Chelsea complete the trophy set
Since Roman Abramovich’s arrival, this is the only trophy that has eluded him in his 20 or so years. This is an elusive trophy, after all you have to win the Champions League to be eligible to play. But having got and missed the opportunity in 2012, the Blues made sure they’ll return home with the title of club world champions.
For some, the Club World Cup is not an important trophy. But not everyone gets the chance of being world champions. By winning last night, Chelsea have joined Man United and Liverpool as the only English teams to win the Club World Cup.
The Champions League is returning soon and Chelsea will be determined to defend their European and World title.
Up next
After their global exploits, focus now shifts to continental and domestic matters. Chelsea’s next four games are in four different competitions. Champions League, EFL Cup final and FA Cup fifth round clashes are in the horizon for Chelsea. There’s still plenty of scope to add to Club World Cup trophy, even if they are out of the title race in the Premier League.
