Chelsea were held at the Bridge in their final pre-season friendly against Spurs. A brace from Hakim Ziyech established a commanding lead for the Blues, but goals from Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn ensured the match ended all square. That marks the end of the pre-season for Chelsea. They have a UEFA Super Cup tie against Villarreal to turn their attention to.
Teams
Both teams started with pretty strong lineups but made changes as the match went on. All except Eduoard Mendy were substituted for Thomas Tuchel’s side. The likes of Tiemoue Bakayoko, Ethan Ampadu, Tino Anjorin, Kenedy and Matt Miazga all got game time off the bench. Meanwhile, Nuno Espirito Santo made just four changes to his starting XI.
Ziyech at the double for Chelsea
Before kick off, in front of a large crowd at Stamford Bridge, there was the Champion’s League trophy presentation. 15 minutes into the match, N’Golo Kante won the ball in typical fashion and gave it to Ziyech. He had Timo Werner in support but instead rifled one fizzer into the bottom corner to give Chelsea the lead. Werner then rounded the keeper and scored but a very tight offside call went against him, after Ziyech had come close to doubling the lead with another long-ranger. Havertz too had an effort from distance saved by Pierluigi Gollini, in what was a dominant showing by the Blues.
In the 49th minute, Ziyech doubled Chelsea’s lead. Marcos Alonso this time provided the assist and it was another precision finish from the Moroccan. Just seven minutes later though, Lucas Moura pulled a goal back completely out of the blue. His innocuous shot took a massive deflection off Antonio Rudiger to completely deceive Eduoard Mendy. Spurs soon levelled the scores when Chelsea lost possession in midfield. Spurs broke quickly to release Steven Bergwijn, who squeezed it in through Mendy’s legs. There was a chance late on for Tammy Abraham, but he was unable to get past Gollini in Spurs’ goal.
