The matchweek 3 of the Premier League ended after Manchester United’s narrow 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers. With the international break to follow, there are no Monday games and action resumes on 11th September. Matchweek 3 was full of surprises and team topping the table is a surprising one. Even more surprising is the team at the bottom of the table!
Matchweek 3 Roundup
Manchester City demolish Arsenal
The weekend’s action got underway at the Etihad, where a troubled Arsenal visited Man City. While the general expectation was that City will win, no one saw a 5-0 demolition coming. Granit Xhaka’s red card proved catastrophic as the hapless Gunners failed to register a single shot on target.
Their misery was compounded later when Norwich scored a goal in their 2-1 defeat against Leicester City. That result sent Arsenal to the bottom, having not scored yet and conceded nine goals in the opening three games.
On the same day, Newcastle United were on the brink of their first win after taking the lead in the 91st minute. But an even later James Ward-Prowse penalty rescued a point for the Saints. West Ham United also failed to pick up a win as their 100% start came to an end. Two goals for Conor Gallagher earned Patrick Vieira’s Crystal Palace a fighting 2-2 draw at the London stadium. Michael Antonio scored his 50th goal in the Premier League.
The big match of the weekend between Liverpool and Chelsea finished all square. Kai Havertz had put the Blues ahead midway through the first half, but a dramatic series of events led to Reece James being sent off, Mo Salah converting a penalty, Antonio Rudiger and Edouard Mendy yellow carded, and the visitors infuriated. But they regathered their composure to put in a stoic performance with 10-men to keep the Reds out and earn a valuable point. The two teams are still level on points, goal difference and goals scored.
Spurs continue unblemished start
On Sunday, a Heung-min Son strike earned Tottenham their third consecutive 1-0 win against Watford. Spurs are now topping the charts and are the only team with three wins from three and had Harry Kane back from the start again. Man United also secured a 1-0 win at Wolves, creating a new record of 28 matches unbeaten away from home. Wolves were arguably the better side for much of the game, but they failed to capitalize on their chances and were punished when Mason Greenwood’s shot deflected into the net. It’s now three consecutive 1-0 losses for Bruno Lage and Wolves. United moved up to third, ahead of Chelsea and Liverpool on goals scored.
